The University of Massachusetts Amherst hosted Rich G. Carter Oregon State University and the Promotion and Tenure – Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PTIE) team as part of their collaboration through U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program and the UMass Amherst Accelerating Research Translation program.
The visit brought together leaders from across campus; including the ART leadership team, faculty innovators, deans, chairs, office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement, Office of the Provost including the newly appointed Vice Provost of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Creativity, Technology Transfer Office, and Office of Research Development to explore how innovation and entrepreneurship can be more deeply woven into faculty Promotion & Tenure processes.
Kicking off the two-day visit, Julian Lustig-Gonzalez and Lisa Korpiewski provided the PTIE team with an inspirational tour of the UMass Amherst Institute for Applied Life Sciences’ state-of-the-art-research and equipment facilities, followed by an introductory meeting with the UMass Amherst ART leadership team, Peter H Reinhart, Karen Utgoff, Burnley Jaklevic, Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, Mike Malone, and Heather Aiken.
The second day was filled with great conversations starting with Burnley Jaklevic, TTO director and team, and Loren Walker from Research Development. Michelle Budig and Laura Vandenberg discussed ART culture change and sustainability with the PTIE team. Later in the morning Rich G. Carter, Jana Bouwma-Gearhart, presented the PTIE effort to a broad group faculty and staff. The day wrapped up with the ART leadership and the PTIE teams reflecting on the visit and future interaction.
