Remembering Robert A. Holton, 81: Pioneering Chemist Behind Lifesaving Taxol

Robert A. Holton, an esteemed organic chemist and professor at Florida State University, passed away at age 81 on May 21, 2025. He was best known for developing a semisynthetic method to produce the cancer drug Taxol (paclitaxel), enabling its large-scale manufacturing and preserving endangered Pacific yew trees. This breakthrough led to lifesaving treatments for breast, lung, and ovarian cancers, among others. Holton’s innovation generated over $350 million in royalties for FSU and helped establish biotech company Taxolog.
