Innovation Ambassadors: Daniel Stevens and Matthew Mauriello

Dr. Daniel Stevens, Director of the School of Music, and Dr. Matthew Mauriello, Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware (UD), are developing innovative technology to make music more accessible for children with autism. Their uCue system combines a simple interactive device with modular music that allows children to adjust musical layers, speeds and sounds to suit their individual sensory needs and preferences. The technology has been deployed in Delaware schools and a community library, with a provisional patent secured through UD’s Office of Economic Innovation and Partnerships. The team is also collecting data on how children interact with music to inform more accessible approaches to music composition and explore future applications in areas such as physical therapy and aging. In their roles as UD Innovation Ambassadors, Stevens and Mauriello are encouraging fellow researchers to engage with communities, pursue invention and translate their research into solutions that address real-world needs.
