This project is aimed at developing turbulence-resistant free-space optical (FSO) communication technology for terrestrial and space-to-ground applications such as providing communications infrastructure, including internet access, broadly, across rural areas and other use cases. For example, StarLink technology quickly supplied internet to Ukraine during the current war using such satellite technology. Current technology relies on adaptive optics (AO) to correct turbulence-induced wavefront distortions. AO is bulky, slow, expensive, and unreliable. Our proposed prototype combines advances in photonic integration, DSP and space-division multiplexing to create a more reliable, scalable, and economical solution.
