ABSTRACT

Various types of scintillation materials (used in particle detectors, x-ray security, nuclear cameras, CT scanners, computed tomography, gamma camera in medical diagnostics, and dosimeters in radiotherapy) are commercially available, but they are severely limited. Low-cost, eco-friendly materials are needed that can be easily manufactured and processed. Dr. Ma and team demonstrated a new generation eco-friendly X-ray scintillators with state-of-the-art performance for the first time in 2020. Under their inaugural STRP project and working with industry partners, the team is working to establish reliable cost-effective processing protocols for mass production of flexible X-ray scintillators with long-term stability for practical X-ray imaging devices and radiation dosimeters. Work at FSU by our researchers is necessary because most industry partners in this space do not have the specialized R&D expertise required to de-risk and standardize this process on their own, so the STRP of funding is critical to bridge the gap.
